Wordle Strategy Guide: Make Every Guess More Useful
Use Wordle feedback carefully, handle repeated letters, avoid trap patterns, and make each guess reveal useful information.
No method guarantees a three- or four-guess solve every day. The practical goal is to make each attempt either solve the puzzle or remove a meaningful group of alternatives.
Pair these ideas with strong starting words, review the rules for beginners, or open the daily Wordle hints for help with the current puzzle.
1. Read all five tiles together
A green tile fixes one position. A yellow tile confirms a letter but rules out that position. A gray tile usually removes a letter, with one important exception: when the same letter appears more than once in your guess, a gray copy can mean the answer contains fewer copies rather than none.
2. Track letter counts
Repeated letters are a common source of errors. If one copy is green and a second copy is gray, the answer may contain exactly one instance. If both copies receive color, the answer contains at least two. Use the full feedback pattern instead of treating each tile independently.
3. Reposition yellow letters
A yellow letter belongs somewhere else. Move it to an untested position while choosing a word that also checks useful new letters. Do not put it back in the same rejected column unless another constraint makes that unavoidable.
4. Recognize trap families
Patterns such as _IGHT can leave several answers. In Normal Mode, consider a valid diagnostic guess that tests multiple possible opening letters even if it cannot be the answer. In Hard Mode, that option may be unavailable because every revealed clue must be used.
5. Avoid automatic rules
“Never repeat a letter” and “always test five new letters” are useful early tendencies, not laws. A repeated-letter guess is correct when the evidence points there. Likewise, solving on the next turn is better than gathering information you no longer need.
6. Use a candidate list carefully
A solver can prevent you from overlooking words and can reproduce duplicate-letter feedback more reliably than memory. Its ranking still depends on its dictionary and scoring method. A concrete trap-family method
Suppose four positions are known and several answers differ in the remaining position. Write down the missing letters, not just the complete words. In Normal Mode, look for one accepted guess containing as many of those letters as possible in distinct slots. The guess does not need to fit the answer pattern; its job is to split the family. Then use its feedback to choose the real answer.
In Hard Mode, first check whether a separating guess can still obey every green and yellow clue. If it cannot, prioritize a plausible family member whose differing letter is also shared by as few alternatives as possible. Hard Mode turns some pattern families into unavoidable sequential tests.
Decide between solving and learning
An information score is most helpful while many candidates remain. Once only one compatible answer is left, play it. With two or three candidates, compare the chance of solving now with the cost of choosing incorrectly. A diagnostic guess is valuable only when the information it buys is worth an extra row.
Why position frequency matters
Overall letter frequency is incomplete. A common letter may be rare in the first position and dominant at the end. The site's letter-frequency study reports each column separately, which makes it more useful for comparing guesses that contain similar letters in different orders.

The trap-family analysis hides each of the five positions in turn across the complete answer model, then groups words whose other four positions match exactly.
